LBCC Student Journalists Capture 19 Awards

LBCC students earned 19 awards at the Journalism Association of Community Colleges Southern Section conference Saturday, Oct. 24 at Cal State Fullerton.

City magazine earned general excellence, tying with other colleges for the top award.

Also, students Alexander Kahrs and Ric Treamor gained fourth place for magazine cover design.

And, students Justin Otte, Scott Prompongsatorn, Paloma Rosenbaum, Kahrs and Teamor teamed up to earn honorable mention for magazine design.

City magazine turns 30 years old this year and has won numerous awards every year as it combines the talents of journalism, photography and photography students taught by Cindy Frye, Suzanne Mapes and Evan Ballinger.

The news Web site and newspaper awards were led by John Fajardo’s first and second place honors in online photos. The accomplishment of winning both first and second was a rare feat for any Community College student.

Fajardo also won honorable mentions for on-the-spot news photo and mail-in sports action photo.

Veronica Vega captured second place for online advertisement and on-the-spot layout.

Michael Simmons earned third place in mail-in layout, fourth in on-the-spot broadcast news writing and honorable mention for copy editing.

Matt Robinson took home a third-place award for mail-in feature photo and Steven Piper a fourth for mail-in informational graphic.

Mark Benton was recognized with honorable mentions for mail-in editorial and column writing.

Other honorable mentions were earned by Daniel Van Hoosier for on-the-spot sports writing, Angel Pardo for on-the-spot critical review and Christian Millan for mail-in sports feature photo.

The mail-in awards for the news Web site and Viking newspaper were produced under the guidance of advisers Cindy Frye, Jim Truitt and Javier Mendoza. Patrick McKean and Jim Truitt teach the current Viking students.

The news Web site turns 10 years old this year and has consistently won numerous awards. The Viking newspaper, like LBCC, turns 82 this year, and has been routinely honored with awards every year.
