LBCC Students Receive Multiple Awards at Journalism Conference

Long Beach City College students received a total of 18 awards at the Journalism Association for Community Colleges (JACC) SoCal Conference on October 29, including “General Excellence” for both the Viking News and City Magazine.

 

Individual students who won awards for their published Viking News materials included:

  • Joshua Miller – third place in Front Page Layout, second and fourth place in Photo Illustration, third and Honorable Mention for Online Photo Essay
  • Jon Peacock – first place in Sports Feature Photo

 

Individual students who won awards for their published City Magazine materials included:

  • Joshua Miller - first place for Cover Design
  • Irina Nizovtseva - second place for Photo Essay and Story, Honorable Mention in Magazine photo
  • Jerick LeBlanc - first place in Magazine photo
  • George Zuniga - fourth place in News Feature Story

 

For work at the conference’s “on-the-spot” competitions, the awards are as follows:

  • Lisette Mendoza - fourth place in News Photo
  • Darrel James - Honorable Mention in News Photo
  • Denny Han - fourth place in News Story
  • Crystal Adams - Honorable Mention in News Story

 

"I'm very proud of the 18 awards the LBCC journalism students won,” said Pat McKean, advisor for the Viking. “They work very hard as do my colleagues. Their dedication has paid off and they inspire future students."

 

More than 30 community colleges participated in the journalism conference. The LBCC journalism students plan on participating in the JACC state conference in Northern California next semester.
