Several Long Beach Community College District Trustees have been recognized by various local organizations in recent months:
Trustee Doug Otto was named Vice Chair of the Board of Directors for the Aquarium of the Pacific. He is a founding board member and has been serving on the executive committee for about 20 years. His appointment comes at an exciting time for the Long Beach landmark, which just broke ground in February on the new Pacific Visions wing. It is the aquarium’s first major expansion since opening in 1998.
Trustee Vivian Malauulu was given the 2017 Peacemaker Award by Long Beach Councilman Dee Andrews. The award is part of the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Peace & Unity Parade and Celebration run by Councilman Andrews’ office. Honorees are chosen based upon their history of volunteering in the community as well as promoting messages of community engagement, nonviolence and unity.
Trustee Sunny Zia was honored by the Regional Hispanic Institute, which named Zia one of its Mujeres del Año, or Women of the Year, for 2016. She was one of 12 women recognized and was named a “Mujer Excepcional.” The Institute honors women annually for making a difference in the community.
