LBCC’s Top Vocal Jazz Ensemble Captures Trophy at Reno Jazz Festival

Long Beach City College’s advanced vocal jazz ensemble, The Lyrical Workers, captured third place in the Community College Division at the 2017 Reno Jazz Festival.

Held annually in April at the University of Nevada in Reno, Nev., the prestigious two-day competition draws more than 300 groups representing middle school, high school and college jazz vocalists and musicians from throughout the western United States. Artists from around the globe perform, adjudicate and conduct clinics.

Under the direction of Professor Andrea Calderwood, LBCC’s 14-member vocal group performed four works: swinging blues chart “Deedles Blues,” arranged by Kerry Marsh; Latin jazz classic “Brazil,” arranged by Paris Rutherford; contemporary jazz/neo soul composition “She,” arranged by Brad Rees; and Big Band standard “Sing, Sing, Sing,” arranged by Darmon Meader. Three LBCC vocalists – Reid Noble, Diamond Ford and Roseann Ruvolo – also earned medals for outstanding solos.
