Viking Journalists Bring Home Awards from 2017 Convention

The Long Beach City College journalism program won 14 awards, including General Excellence for the Viking News, at the 2017 Journalism Association of Community Colleges (JACC).

More than 30 community colleges participated in this year’s JACC state convention, held March 30 to April 1 in Sacramento.

Individual students who won awards for their published Viking News materials were:

  • Joshua Miller, fourth place for a sports feature photo and honorable mention for front-page design
  • Eddie Diaz, fourth place for online video
  • Darrell James, honorable mention for feature photo

Individual students who won awards for their published City Magazine materials were:

  • Irina Nizotseva, fourth place for a photo story essay and an honorable mention for photo
  • Kiralynn Lemus Becket, fourth place in photo essay
  • Susan Usas, honorable mention for a news feature

For work at the conference’s on-the-spot competitions, the awards are as follows:

  • Presley Swearingen, first place for the creative portrait contest and fourth place in feature photo
  • Brigid McLaughlin, fourth place in feature writing
  • Darlene Maes, honorable mention for an editorial cartoon
  • Amanda Rodriguez, honorable mention for sports photo

Viking News advisor Pat McKean said the convention helps build comradery between LBCC students and gives them an opportunity to network with students from other colleges.

“They make good connections with the industry, and they check out universities for transfer,” McKean said.
