LBCC Dancers to Perform at Historic Venue

Long Beach City College dance students were selected to perform at the prestigious Jacob’s Pillow in Massachusetts next month.

LBCC is one of five colleges and universities chosen as part of the American College Dance Association Highlights performances. The show takes place Aug. 24 at Jacob’s Pillow in Becket, Mass., a venerated dance center that is also a U.S. National Historic Landmark and recipient of the National Medal of Arts.

Other schools performing are Modesto Junior College, University of Hartford, University of Michigan and Virginia Commonwealth University.

“This is the first time in the history of the LBCC dance program that we are performing at Jacob’s Pillow,” said LBCC Dance Professor Stephanie Powell. “It’s such a legendary place. They read about this place in the history books.”

The five colleges were chosen for their standout dance performances at the American College Dance Association’s (ACDA) 13 regional conferences held throughout the country in April. LBCC was selected to perform at the closing night gala during this year’s regional conference – also a first for LBCC.

At Jacob’s Pillow, 12 LBCC dancers will perform a modern dance piece, Ebony Suite, choreographed by Bernard H. Gaddis, of the Las Vegas Contemporary Dance Theater, who came to Long Beach to work with the students.

“Opportunities like this don't come often, and it means the world to me that I get to perform where dance legends and dance royalty have performed,” said student Frederick W. Miller, a Dance major. “I'm looking forward to the educational portion behind the historic grounds of Jacob’s Pillow.”

The LBCC dancers are raising $14,000 to cover the cost of the travel, accommodations and other expenses. The group will be hosting various fundraisers, including a fundraiser at Chipotle on July 24 between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. See the flyer for details.
