Students Win Journalism Awards
LBCC Wins Journalism Awards April 16, 2008 The Long Beach City College Viking Newspaper, lbccvikingnews.com and City Magazine were recently awarded with 15 awards at the Journalism Association of Community Colleges convention. LBCC placed 8th overall in the California community college journalism awards. "The entire Long Beach City College family is proud of our journalism students and department," said LBCC President Eloy Ortiz Oakley. "We congratulate the team at the Viking Newspaper and City Magazine for their hard work and dedication." Viking editor and reporter Michael Brown won two awards during the convention that drew about 600 students, teachers and professional journalists from California and Colorado. Against competitors from 44 other Community Colleges, Brown earned third place in opinion writing and an honorable mention for broadcast newswriting. Second-place honors were awarded to Chris Rendon in photography and Adam Lau for sports photography. Jeffrey Hitchens gained a 3rd place for sports feature photography. Hitchens and Nicholas Palomino Mendoza both took home scholarships. Mae Collin, Marlene Escobar, Henry Palencia, Floyd Supnet, Matt Vanselow and Hayley Thomas all won awards for their work on City Magazine. Other honorable mentions were gained by Kori Filipek for student-produced advertisement, Stephanie Raygoza for on-the-spot feature writing, Palencia for magazine cover, Christine Amarantus for magazine opinion and Christian Millan and Michael Simmons, for online photography. Stephanie Raygoza and Viking co-editor in chief Shahani Salcedo were also recognized as student leaders and adviser Patrick McKean earned an extra-mile award as an association volunteer. The convention also included dozens of workshops and training seminars, including a keynote welcome by Los Angeles Times Editor Russ Stanton. The magazine is advised by Nancy Redmond, Mike Jacobs and Evan Ballinger and the online site and newspaper are advised by McKean and Jim Truitt.
